The temperatures are rising, summer is coming. But this summer will be a little different than the years before: As for me, I will probably spend it on my balcony in beautiful Linz in Austria due to Covid-19. If it’s getting hot I might enjoy ice cream. How does poultry react to rising temperatures, and how can phytogenic feed additives offer support here?

Heat stress in poultry production?

After all, modern broiler breeds have a continuously increasing growth rate and feed efficiency, which coincides with a reduced heat tolerance. Housing broilers at high ambient temperatures adversely affects performance, intestinal integrity, immune response, and meat quality.

In poultry, typical symptoms of heat stress are reflected by the following signs:

  • Reduced feed and increased water intake
  • Reduced movement and laying down
  • Strongly increase breathing rate and gasping to stimulate heat loss by evaporation
  • Increased morbidity and mortality
